Switching to UniFi from eero, Orbi, or Google Wifi: what actually changes
Let's be fair to the mesh kits: they set up in ten minutes and they cover a normal apartment fine. People don't leave eero or Orbi because those products fail. They leave because they hit a wall the product was designed to have — and the walls are always the same four.
The four walls
- Wireless backhaul. Mesh nodes talk to each other over the same radios that serve your devices. Every hop halves real throughput. UniFi APs are wired, so every AP delivers full speed.
- No real network controls. VLANs for the IoT junk drawer, proper firewall rules, per-device routing — consumer apps don't expose them because their audience doesn't ask. Until you're the person asking.
- No PoE, no cameras, no growth. Mesh kits are WiFi and only WiFi. The moment you want a doorbell that doesn't ransom your clips monthly, you're buying into a second ecosystem anyway.
- The subscription creep. Security features, history, camera storage — the consumer kits monetize with monthly fees. UniFi's controller and Protect recording are free software on your own hardware.
What it honestly costs you
Setup is twenty minutes instead of ten, and there are more decisions to make — that's real. The hardware cost is closer than people expect: a Cloud Gateway Ultra ($159) plus a U7 Pro ($235) is $394 and replaces a flagship mesh 2-pack outright, with change left over against the three-packs.
The migration, without the outage
- Keep your ISP modem. The gateway plugs into it exactly like the old router did.
- Recreate the WiFi name and password on the UniFi side first — most of the house reconnects without anyone touching a device.
- Start with one AP. If you can't pull cable yet, the Express 7 ($249) family mesh-scales wirelessly — a legitimate UniFi mesh while the cable runs wait, and everything stays useful after they're done.
- Sell the old kit. Mesh systems hold resale value weirdly well. It funds the second AP.
