The apartment kit: great WiFi in under 1,200 sq ft

Apartments are the easiest networking problem there is, which is exactly why the industry oversells them. Under 1,200 square feet, one well-placed radio covers everything — so a three-node mesh kit means you paid for two boxes whose main job is creating interference for the first one.

Two ways to do it right

The one-box version — $249

The UniFi Express 7 ($249) is a gateway, firewall, controller and WiFi 7 access point in a box smaller than your router's power brick. Plug it into the ISP modem, done. If you later move somewhere bigger, it mesh-scales with a second unit — or becomes a node in a larger UniFi network. Nothing about it is disposable.

The two-box version — about $303

Separating the gateway from the radio buys you placement freedom — the gateway lives with the modem in whatever closet the ISP chose, and the AP goes where the signal should come from. It also buys headroom: the Ultra routes a full gigabit with security screening on, and adding a second AP later is a cable, not a replacement.

Which one?

Renting short-term, hate wires, one bedroom: the Express 7. Planning to stay, have gigabit-plus internet, or already imagining a camera at the door: the two-box kit. Both run the same software and both leave the mesh kits behind on day one.

Renter-friendly mounting

Nobody's drilling the landlord's ceiling. The U7 Lite sits happily on a bookshelf top — aim for the highest central shelf you have, clear of the TV and the microwave. The Express 7 was designed for exactly this life: shelf, desk, or media console, standing upright. The one upgrade worth asking the landlord about: a single flat Ethernet run along the baseboard from the modem closet to the living area. Painter's-tape-friendly, fully reversible, transforms the result.

What about the smart-home pile?

Thirty IoT devices in 900 square feet is a density question, not coverage — and one UniFi AP handles client counts that choke consumer routers. If your devices outnumber your square meters, you're still fine; if you want them firewalled off from your laptop, both kits above do VLANs properly.
