How to choose a UniFi switch
Count PoE devices, not total ports
Every AP and camera draws PoE. Add them up, add two spare ports for the future, and check the wattage budget — a Lite 8 PoE powers four PoE+ devices comfortably; eight cameras and three APs wants a Pro Max.
2.5G matters where Wi-Fi 7 lives
A Wi-Fi 7 client on 6 GHz can outrun a gigabit port. Feed U7-series APs from a 2.5G switch port and the whole path stays clear — the Flex Mini 2.5G at $49 is the cheapest fix in networking.
When in doubt, go one size up
The price step between switch sizes is small; the cost of re-cabling a full switch isn't. If you're between sizes, take the bigger one — that's the one piece of gear we'll talk you into.
