How many access points do you actually need?

Coverage problems are usually sizing problems. Almost every "my WiFi is bad" story we hear starts with one router asked to cover a space that physics says needs three radios. Here's how installers actually count.

The rules of thumb

  • One AP per ~1,500 square feet of open-ish residential construction. That's a planning number, not a maximum — an AP will reach further, but speed at the edge is what suffers.
  • Every floor gets its own AP. Ceilings and floors eat signal faster than interior walls. One AP per floor minimum, then apply the square-footage rule per floor.
  • Walls have a price. Drywall is nearly free; brick, concrete, plaster-on-lath and big mirrors are not. Old masonry construction can cut effective radius roughly in half — count it as needing twice the APs you'd guess.
  • Count clients, not just area. Forty smart-home devices in 1,200 square feet is a density problem, not a coverage problem. More APs at lower power beats one AP shouting.
  • Wire the APs. Wireless mesh halves your throughput at every hop. It's a fallback, not a design. If you can pull one cable, pull it to the AP.

Placement, in three lines

Ceilings beat shelves — APs are designed to radiate downward and outward. Center the AP in the space it serves rather than hiding it in the office corner where the modem lives. And keep it out of the mechanical closet; a furnace makes an excellent signal shield.

Three worked examples

1,200 sq ft apartment, one floor: one U7 Pro, ceiling-mounted near the middle. Done. A UCG-Ultra routes it.

2,800 sq ft, two floors: one AP per floor as the baseline; add a third if the ground floor sprawls or the construction is heavy. Two U7 Pros plus a U7 Lite for the basement office is a very common bill of materials. A PoE switch — Lite 8 PoE — powers all three over the cable that feeds them.

5,000 sq ft plus a detached garage: three to four ceiling APs inside by the per-floor math, one U7 Pro Outdoor covering the yard and garage approach. At this scale the gateway and switch sizing matter as much as the AP count — this is Dream Machine SE territory.
