How to choose a UniFi gateway
Match it to your internet plan, not your ambitions
The Cloud Gateway Ultra routes a full gigabit with headroom — on cable internet, spending more buys you nothing. The Fiber and Max models earn their price on multi-gig plans, and the Dream Machine line adds rack mounting, NVR storage and PoE for offices.
Cameras change the answer
If UniFi Protect cameras are in your plan, pick a gateway with integrated storage — a Dream Machine SE or Pro records footage without a separate NVR. A handful of cameras on an Ultra works; a parking lot of them doesn't.
One gateway per network
Every kit needs exactly one UniFi Network host. Add APs and switches freely — but two gateways on one network is a support ticket waiting to happen. Unsure? The planner sizes it from your address.
